桌子table下的"偷偷摸摸"

  今天我們要講的習慣用語都包括table這個詞,它最普通的意思是“桌子”。

 

  第一個習慣用語是: lay all your cards on the table,直譯是“把你所有的牌都放到桌面上來”,也就是攤牌,引申為“亮出底細,毫無保留地坦誠相見”。

  這個習慣用語的出典顯然是紙牌遊戲。按照規則某一方在一定的時候得把手上的牌翻開來攤在桌面上。這樣他就是把自己的底細都明明白白地告訴別人了。這個習慣用語沿用至今已經四百多年了。

 

我們來看個例子:

 

 

  例句-1:First, why don't you lay all your cards on the table? I mean all of your income, debts and savings so we can figure out what to do about buying this house. You'll need a lot of cash up front.

 

  首先你為什麼不把你的財務情況和盤托出呢?我的意思是你一共有多少收入、債務和儲蓄。這樣我們才能合計購買這棟房子的步驟。你先得有好多現金然後才能買房。

 

  我們再學一個習慣用語: under the table。Under the table照字面意思來解釋就是“在桌面底下。” Under the table和剛才學的習慣用語lay all your cards on the table意思剛好相反,也就是“不上臺面的、暗地裏的”,可以指偷偷摸摸的暗中交易。

 

  例句-2:In certain countries nothing can be done without money changing hands under the table. This is especially true in places where officials get paid so little they have trouble making ends meet.
