傳說，月亮上有一隻兔子站在一棵桂樹下，捧著長生不老藥（holding the Elixir of Immortality in his hands.）。兔子象徵長壽（is the emblem of longevity），因為兔子的繁育能力很強（with high reproduction ability，英語中的rabbit也有此含義），因此人們都說，兔年是個特別適合生育的年份。
兔子溫順（docile），象徵優雅的氣質、良好的風度，待人隨和（The Rabbit symbolizes graciousness, good manners.）。屬兔的人一般性格內向（introverted），但是有天賦（talented），有大志（ambitious），情趣高雅 (have excellent taste)。屬兔的人往往口齒清楚（articulate）、認真勤奮（conscientious），大多不失約（never back out of any contract）。
