1918年，蘇丹阿赫邁監獄建成，用於關押反對奧斯曼帝國統治的藝術家、作家和政見不同者。此後，該監獄又轉為陸軍監獄。1992年開始，四季賓館花費了4年時間進行裝修。如今，這裡的歷史印記依舊保留，但那種蕭索的殘酷監獄體驗早就蕩然無存了。<br>

這座監獄曾先後隸屬奧匈帝國和南斯拉夫聯邦軍隊，而到了1991年，在斯洛文尼亞獨立之後，市民們對這座監獄建築的未來莫衷一是，有的主張將其推翻重建，而有的藝術家卻希望能夠把它保留下來，希望將歷史留存。在監獄賓館改造過程當中，有80多名當地和國際藝術家參與到賓館形象設計當中。花費了10年時間，2003年，這座賓館開始對遊客開放，這時，監獄已經變成了一座滿是藝術設計的建築。雖說監獄的表面被藝術塗鴉覆蓋，但是監獄牢房和隔離室依舊保持了原來的樣子。<br>

1809年，芬蘭擺脫瑞典的統治，轉而歸於俄羅斯帝國名下，而赫爾辛基則被統治者選為首府。1832年，首府必備的統治工具──監獄，在這個寒冷北半球的小村莊裡興建起來。1837年，監獄落成，其間還包括了一所教堂，如此這座教堂已然是赫爾辛基排行第二的老教堂了。<br>
在此後的年月中，監獄又補蓋了3座副樓以緩解使用壓力，待到2002年，卡塔亞諾卡監獄終於因為過於擁擠而被迫停止使用，重新進行翻修，變身住宿場所。<br>
