林旺爺爺的標本製造過程

二次大戰後，林旺跟隨著孫立人將軍由緬甸輾轉來到了台灣，而後圈養在動物園裡。 
 
一生顛沛流離的林旺，定居在動物園已經超過了50個年頭。 
在這段時間裡，陪伴著你我的成長，匯聚了你我的記憶，林旺早已經不再是一隻象。 
為了將永遠的林旺印象留存下來，一個由國人自製的最大型動物標本， 
在經歷了一年多的製作過程之後終於完成了，大家心目中的老朋友林旺總算回來了。 
 
 
炯炯目光午後的斜陽透過窗櫺的細縫，細長的光影照射在林旺的臉龐。 
炯炯的目光，令人誤以為林旺又復活了。

用力的拉皮像林旺這樣的大型動物標本製作台灣罕見，製作過程中讓工作團隊吃盡了苦頭。 
光是要攤開數百公斤重的表皮，就得耗盡工作人員吃奶的力氣。

縮小模型為了力求標本的尺寸正確無虞，林旺的標本採用了"艾克雷立體生態標本剝製術"。 
也就是先依據動物的真實呎吋，雕塑出身體的原形，再披覆上動物的皮毛。而傳統的標本製 
作，是先處理好動物的皮毛，才在內部填充充填物。對於小動物還應付得來，對於大型動物 
的標本尺寸就很難拿捏了，遑論肌理紋路的掌控。工作人員將測量得來的數據，縮小成1/8的 
模型，來研究並設計標本原形的結構。

片皮 
由於林旺的表皮暫存於冷凍庫長達數個月之久，脫水使得整張表皮不僅縮水且變硬， 
增高了製作的難度。為了還原表皮的延展性，工作人員必須一刀刀的將真皮層削薄。

片皮 
這是段很累人的時光。厚厚的象皮要將它一刀刀的片下，可不是件容易的事。一般的 
美工刀刃只要割個幾下，就需要磨刀石伺候了。往往割個一小時下來，已經是腰酸背 
痛手腳發軟了。

工作團隊歷經了一年的努力，林旺總算又栩栩如生的回到了世人眼前。標本完成當天， 
工作人員興高采烈的在林旺跟前合影留念。

削足適皮林旺的三圍數據，是工作人員在林旺過世當天慌忙中所測量而來。 
在爾後的上皮過程中，才赫然發現：依照尺寸精心雕塑的原型，竟然和真皮 
不相吻合!這可急煞了所有的工作人員，幾經檢討才確定原先的數據有所失誤 
。所以工作人員只好削去部分的原型尺寸來吻合真皮。

繼續片皮 
因為片皮這個過程花了工作團隊一個多星期的時間，在漫長的工作中， 
我也同工作人員拿起工具一起片皮。厚厚的象皮，重得難以想像。

慕名而來的遊客雖然工廠地處偏僻，然而自從標本開工製作以來，每到星期例假日， 
總會有慕名的遊客找得到地方來參觀林旺的製作過程，或摸摸象牙，或合影留念。林旺 
雖死，但它的身影依舊深刻留在人們的心底。

草圖 
由於林旺身前非常不願意讓人接近，因此動物園也沒有林旺詳細的三圍資料， 
只有在牠過世的當天完成了第一次也是最後一次的測量。由於當時的林旺倒臥 
在水池中，遭擠壓的大肚囊讓工作人員誤估了三圍，造成爾後標本製作的困擾 
。工作團隊根據這得來不易的數據繪製了標本的草圖。

草圖 
簡單的草圖和初完工的標本原形，是我見到林旺標本的第一印象小。而雜亂的 
工作環境，的確讓當時的我非常苦惱要如何拍攝下去。不過爾後工作人員的熱 
情，著實讓我對這個專題吃了定心丸。

午餐 
在那狹小的工廠理，工作人員日以繼夜的趕工。累了就在林旺身旁小憩，餓了也在林旺身旁吃便當。

測眼距 
由於林旺的眼珠無法透過任何的方法將牠保留下來，因此工作團隊自美國採購 
了尺寸適當的大象玻璃眼珠來替代。為了準確無誤的放置眼珠，仔細的測量工 
作是非常的必要。

為了還原林旺生前的神韻，台北市立動物園協助匯集了數百張的照片，提供工作團隊對於細部修整的參考。

上皮 
經過漫長的修整工作之後，工作團隊利用簡單的吊車和耗盡了吃奶的力氣， 
總算將林旺的真皮吊掛至原型上，準備進行縫合的工作。

縫皮 
原本用來縫製麻布袋，長達20公分的縫針，被工作團隊巧妙的運用在縫製林旺的過程中。 
一針針的，將林旺真皮縫合在原型上。

修補 
由於真皮在剝製過程中，因為工作人員不小心留下的刀傷和藥漬痕跡，使得真皮外觀不甚理想。 
除了一針針的修補外，還得透過填補與上色來回復栩栩如生的外觀。

上色修飾 
為了真實的呈現出林旺的神韻，工作團隊利用了顏色的深淺變化與筆觸的痕跡，來還原出林旺生前的皮膚質感。

後肢的特寫 
由於真皮浸泡在防腐藥水中長達數個月之久，大部分的指甲已遭藥水腐蝕殆盡。 
工作人員運用適當的人造材料，來製作林旺的指甲，在斜陽下很難辨別其真偽。

最後修補 
工程的最後一天，原本以為已經大功告成，準備歡送林旺回到動物園。 
然而執著的工作團隊，還是不滿意的拿著工具，修這修那，唯恐會有一丁點的疏漏。

歷經工作團隊數個月的努力，林旺總算栩栩如生的回到國人眼前。 
身高400公分，身長312公分，重逾2700公斤的大型動物標本， 
是個國人第一次自製最大型的動物標本。然而其擬真的神韻， 
比起國外的案例一點也不遜色。

哇大象跑出來了在動物園等待吊掛的現場裡，逼真的林旺標本出現在園區行政道路上，

在吊車的吊掛下，林旺的標本緩緩的完成了回家的最後旅程。 
在眾人的簇擁下，林旺的標本準備進入教育中心裡。

製作林旺的過程中，不只是這群工作人員辛勞付出而已。動物園各科室的工作人員， 
還有各大學的相關學者也都在幕後默默的付出與協助。 
我想林旺不只單單是一隻象而已，它匯聚了大多數人共同回憶，這樣的標本是有它的歷史意義， 
也是你我曾經共有的一段時光裡，最美麗快樂的心靈語言。
